The route below was the original plan. However due to flooding in the Bolivian lowlands plus a desire to go to Colombia we dramatically changed our intentions. See the google map on the home page for the actual route taken
Starting from the most southerly city in the world, Ushuaia, we will cycle north across windswept Tierra del Fuego. After a ferry across the Magellan Straits we will head up through Patagonia past the majestic Torres del Paine. Crossing into Chile, we will link up with the Camino Austral and then the Pan American Highway up to Santiago via Chile's volcanic Lake District At this point we will probably tackle one of the passes over the spine of the Andes into Argentina again and then northwards up to the Bolivian altiplano via Salta, Potosi and Uyuni. Once we have got our breath back in La Paz we will head down into the greenery via the 'most dangerous road in the world'. Minor roads lead us through the rain forest to the Brazilian border at Guayaramerin, where we pick up the Transamazonian highway that eventually leads us to Manaus and the Venezuelan border at Boa Vista. If we are getting fed up with the mozzies, snakes and the bad roads we do have the option of slinging our bikes on a boat at this point and spending a couple of weeks writing diaries and going slowly insane Apocalypse Now style down the Rio Madeira and up the Rio Negro. Cycling up between the 'Tepuy' mountains in southern Venezuela, we will call in at the Angel Falls, the world's highest waterfall, before finishing off with a quick paddle in the Caribbean and perhaps a beer in Caracas to celebrate! |
