Hi Steve (I presume itīs you!)- thanks for the detailed information. We are in Santa Rosa de Osas after taking some time in Medellin meeting some friends. Last little hill tomorrow and then the 2500m descent- can't wait! Missed the takeaseat tandem guy somehow- apparently he passed through town yesterday.

Happy travels- are you heading into Venezuela?

hey...some info for ya if your riding to Santa Marta...where I am now....1750km in 16 riding days.....there is a new road that goes closer to the coast....NO buses or trucks...amazing....follow road by the sea from historic centre to aiport and continue past...and follow along the beach....few services, excellent shoulder....and 55km or so to the volcan de lodo....put your bike in a restruant there...pay 5,000p and soak in the mud...wash off in the lake.....well worth it.....then into Barranquilla....went thru the city....didnīt think much of it....ring road to santa marta probably better.....stayed in the last hotel before the only bridge over the rio magdelena.....20,000 with air....hotel universal....there are 4 or 5 gas stattions right before the bridge....its in the 2nd last one...just a truckers hotel....135km

over the bridge there are zero services or houses for the next 50km!!!!!!!!!!! very unusual for colombia....excellent shoulder...and great marshes....very close to the sea....great bird life......100km exactly to santa marta.....15 km from town there is a division....take the left thru the beache resort...starts with an R i think.....and you will climb up a hill for 10 15 mins and have great views of santa marta before entering. great town...not to big.

where are you now?

ya we met him 2 days from Cartagena....was with a guy who owns a sailboat and gave him a ride from panama to cartagena....he was going to medellin with him. hell stop in pasto and hook up with my brother in law carlos hopefully.

we got here on the 28 to cartagena that is....1500km from pasto in 14 days straight...paul flies out of here in a few days and im riding to Barranquilla monday and santa marta tuesday and will fly to bogota on wed to start work. last two days will be icing on the cake....great riding around empty streets of old cartagena on a sunday when everything is closed. you have a 200m climb 15 to 20 before the city and then drop down...the rest is mostly flat....there is a variation from the main road....the road that goes to tolu on the coast....take it half way ...then go north on a quieter...flatter road...with lots of big trees for shade....cartagena is VERY hot and humid.
glad to hear the tire thing is sorted....have a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not quite 850 miles because we're planning to finish on the coast rather than Caracas- probably Cartagena or maybe Santa Marta- don't really fancy a bike ride through Venezuela's oil fields!

Photos and Journal going up now

Dave

Steve and Paul- hope all is going well. We managed to find some 28 inch tubes to fit so punctures less of an issue now. In Medellin now taking it easy before the last hill of the trip tomorrow! There is a guy coming south from Cartagena on a tandem on his own; have you met him yet? He gives rides to anybody who wants one! See www.takeaseat.org.

looks like we will stay ahead of you to cartagena....should be there in 7 days...on the 29th.......8 days to here...cycling everyday 100 average...no probs...security is excellent and people very helpful....awesome scenery.
cheers
steve and Paul....canadian and belgiun....brother in law made it to cali and went back to pasto.

Hi everyone,

Weīve had a slow few days since Quito. Firstly Gary got ill so we had to take a day and a half off and since then weīve had big winds and big hills. We crossed the border into Columbia this morning and are already overwhelmed about how friendly people are here. According to everybody we have asked it is pretty safe here at the moment as long as we cycle in the day, but we are going to avoid camping for the time being just in case.

Hi everyone. AS you may have noted by the very straight line on our map, we opted to take the bus to Quito from Cusco. After looking out the window for 60 hours and seeing nothing but shanty towns and flat desert I canīt say Iīm too disappointed about not being able to cycle this stretch (for a second opinion see www.cyclingsouthamerica.co.uk - the guys had a really bad time on this part). The plan is to set off tomorrow up to Columbia, which we are assured isnīt as dangerous as most people think.

New photos up now!

Although it may be straightforward to predict how long a 150 KM stint will last when travelling by touring bike, the same cannot be said of public buses in Bolivia. Team SAC, when not pushing/pulling the vehicle in question, has made the most of this unexpected downtime by contributing to the world of geographically-minded humour... (A tactical substitution of Shaw for Olney was made after Olney made clear that he preferred the company of his iPod over our fine efforts at comedy.) All praise/ignominy should be lavished on the Wilson-West-Shaw trio.
