The End of the World
Posted by Dave on 03-02-07.

As we emerged from the airport terminal we were met by ferocious winds and steady drizzle. Welcome to Ushuaia, the most southerly city in the world and the so called ´End of the world.´ After 32 hours on the plane my legs were feeling a little stiff and Gary´s were still wrapped around his ears, so we decided to stretch them out a bit by cycling the 5km or so into town. Bikes reassembled and hostel found we settled down to a bit of food and a celebratory beer.

Ushuaia is sandwiched between the Beagle channel and a range of snow capped mountains behind. Apart from the fantastic location it is pretty unremarkable and after a morning´s wandering we felt like we had covered everything.

The actual start of our route is 25km south of Ushuaia, where Ruta 3 finally finishes. Being suckers for a photo opportunity we decided this couldn´t be missed and we were rewarded with some great views, the obligatory sign post photo and some valuable experience of the state or Argentinian roads.

Tonight we are back in Ushuaia and ready for the off tomorrow, hoping to be over the pass and into Rio Grande within a few days.
